Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology (PGDPT)

 

The M.Sc. Petroleum Engineering and Project Development Programme is an International Collaborative Graduate Programme between IFP School France and the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria and it is sponsored by NNPC and TOTAL E & P Nigeria Limited Joint Venture. The Programme is run under the Institute of Petroleum Studies.

Award of Degree

Successful students at the end of the programme shall receive a Diploma of the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

The Institute of Petroleum Studies was established in 2003 as a bold effort to remedy the skills gap between the theory of the classroom and the practical needs of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria. It is a collaborative graduate school between the Ecole du Petrole et des Moteurs (IFP School), Paris, France, and the University of Port Harcourt. The institute offers a conducive learning environment, full Internet access and virtual library, hands-on training using one computer per student. Students use industry software, case studies and undertake numerous field visits. Students are encouraged to live and work together, thus encouraging the development of team spirit.

The aim of this operations-oriented Post Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology Programme sponsored by oil and gas producing/operating companies is to improve the technical competence and skills of graduates from the communities in which they operate to make them effective and competitive for recruitment in the petroleum industry. It is designed for sustainable development of oil and gas producing communities.

On completion of this Programme, the graduates will, among other skills, be able to:

  • Effectively use Petroleum Engineering software
  • Supervise the drilling of exploration and development wells and carry out drilling optimization programmes
  • Supervise, and evaluate well completion, work over and well stimulation programmes
 
  • Operate onshore and offshore oil and gas production facilities
  • Carry out well performance enhancement programmes

The duration of the programme shall be twelve (12) calendar months of intensive full time study.

 

Successful students at the end of the programme shall receive a Diploma of the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Students will be presented for Associate Environmental Practitioners (AEP) Certification (NREP, USA), Safety Certification (NISP, Nigeria) and Computer Competence Certifications.

Candidates must possess a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) honours bachelor’s degree in any branch of Engineering or the physical/chemical sciences and should have completed their NYSC.

Mode of Study and Examination: The Mode of Study shall be Modular and not Semester. Students are expected to offer and pass all taught courses, field/Laboratory work/visits, Seminar and Team/individual industrial projects. Weekly examinations will be administered.

Course Delivery: The students are taught by lecturers from the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) Nigeria, and experts from the petroleum industry both in Nigeria and abroad.

Sponsorship:Candidates should be sponsored by operating companies, service companies, PTDF and other sponsoring agencies. (Note that sponsorship of candidate(s) by any of the participating companies does not guarantee recruitment of such candidate(s) into their Employment at the end of the programme.
