The mission of the Institute is to meet the needs of the petroleum industry through a commitment to excellence in training, applied research, continuing education and capacity building.
The vision of the Institute of Petroleum Studies is to become the foremost international Centre of Excellence in Petroleum Geosciences & Technology, Petroleum Economics & Management, and Petroleum Policy & Strategic Studies in Africa.
Established in 2003, Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS) is a postgraduate institution of international standard which evolved from the collaboration between the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria and IFP School, France. The international stature of IFP School is attested to by age-long collaboration and partnership with such renowned institutions of higher learning as the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London (UK) and Colorado School of Mines, USA.
In a parallel vein, the University of Port Harcourt is in collaboration with topflight Universities in South Africa, United States of America and the United Kingdom. This strategic trend of global collaborative substructure has resulted in the amalgam of different traditions with the application of diverse technology programmes in IPS.
In addition to pursuing an aggressive policy of home-grown human capital development in line with world standards by offering international recognized, industry-relevant and professionally sound and certified programmes, IPS saves the industry and the government foreign exchange investments in postgraduate training. IPS promotes international and national academic collaborations and linkages, partnership with industry and collaboration with national and international professional bodies. The healthy relationship between town and gown makes it possible for the industry and professional bodies to be actively involved in driving the programme life-circle of IPS curriculum development to course delivery/joint project supervision.
Operating under the aegis of Centre for Oil and Gas Technology, IPS is sponsored by TOTAL E&P Nigeria Limited and NNPC Joint Venture.
The Strategic Plan designed at the inception of the Institute has created room for expansion. Such expansionist propensities have paved the way for the establishment of eight new Centers.
